When you have big dreams, but don’t have a big bank account balance, it can feel like a lost cause trying to get together enough cash to make those dreams a reality. There are however several ways to free up extra money to put towards your savings goal, and some of them might surprise you.

Make your own food and snacks

That $5-10 takeaway option might not seem expensive, but when you work out what the ingredients would cost you if you were to make that meal from scratch you might be surprised. The same goes for pre-packaged snacks like bliss balls, muesli bars, muffins etc. Making these from scratch, especially if you buy ingredients in bulk, can save you a huge amount of money. Make up batches, and freeze and you’ll be spending less time on prep.

Unplug those appliances

Do you wonder why some people unplug that charger that isn’t connected to the phone from the outlet? The answer is electric company still charges you when there are things connected to outlet even though it is off or not in-use. You can also get a power bar.  It is a device that makes your life easier and more efficient. Connecting those electronic appliances to a power bar easily cut off those gadgets with just only one flick of switch.

Get that foot off the brake

The more times you accelerate- brake- repeat, the more fuel you use. It’s also causing more wear and tear on your car. Try and jump on the motorway and avoid traffic lights if possible, and make sure that you fill up on cheap fuel days.

Categorise your expenses

Sort your spending into different categories to work out which as essential expenses and non-essential purchases. The latter list might shock you. It’s amazing how many little purchases we make here or there, and seeing all of these added up can be a reality check we badly need.

Work at home

Working at home could allow you to save money. When you work outside the home, you must commute to work, spending on public transport or fuel for your car. You are also less likely to eat out, instead preparing lunched and snacks with ingredients at hand. You may have the option to work with the kids at home which can minimise childcare fees (if this works for you).

Ditch the perfume

Perfume is something many of us use on a daily basis, but is quite an expensive item.  A good substitution is essential oils. By mixing a few drops of the oil in water, one small bottle can lasts for a long time. You can also make an essential oil air freshener by putting in a spray bottle and misting around your home.
